On any given night in the spring and fall, hundreds of thousands—and at times millions—of birds migrate across North America. Of the more than 650 species of North American breeding birds, more than half are migratory. Some species, like waterfowl, follow preferred pathways on their annual migrations that are often related to stopover locations that provide reliable food supplies. Smaller birds tend to migrate in broad fronts across the landscape using different routes in spring and fall, to take advantage of seasonal patterns in weather and food.
